Purpose: This study is titled “The Role of Deliberate Practice in Counselor-in-Trainings’ Counseling Self-Efficacy” (IRB #: IRB-FY2024-223). The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of how counselors-in-training(CIT)’s engagement in deliberate practice may be related to their counseling self-efficacy and inform how counselor educators may integrate deliberate practice principles in curriculum and field experience to enhance CIT’s self-efficacy.

What you would be asked to do:
You will be asked to complete a one-time, online survey via Qualtrics. This survey will include brief demographic questions followed by items to collect your self-assessment of time spent on learning activities, learning habits, and counseling self-efficacy. The estimated survey completion time is approximately between 20-30 minutes.

Will being in this study help you?
There are no direct benefits for participation in this study. If you participate in this study, you can expect that your response will contribute important insight to CACREP programs regarding improving CIT’s counseling self-efficacy using principles and aspects of deliberate practice. The outcomes have potential future implications in coursework, training, and experiential learning.

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for you? 
There are no foreseeable risks, discomforts, or undesired outcomes associated with voluntarily participating in this study beyond the minimal cost or sacrifice of time resulting from completing the online survey. The study does not use any deception for involvement, and the research does not contain any sensitive content or questions that could produce any foreseeable undesired emotional or behavioral responses.

Will you be compensated for participating in this study?
You will not be paid for participating in this study.

Who will see your information?
We will protect the information we collect for this study, but we cannot guarantee complete secrecy. The only people who will see your answers will be the people who work on the study and those legally required to supervise our study.
• I will protect your privacy and the data you provide by utilizing Qualtrics system requesting no identifying information.
• Information collected through your participation may be utilized as follows: manuscript submission to professional journals and conference proposal via poster and/or presentation.
• Despite taking steps to protect your privacy, we can never fully guarantee your privacy will be protected. If you tell us something that makes us believe that you or others have been or may be physically harmed, we may report that information to the appropriate agencies.
• Individuals and organizations responsible for conducting or monitoring this research may be permitted access to and inspect the research records. This includes Idaho State University’s Human Subjects Committee.

What if you say “Yes” but change your mind later?
You can stop your participation in this study at any time by closing your browser window and it will not be held against you. You will not be penalized. Once you’ve submitted anonymous data, it cannot be withdrawn since it will be unidentifiable. Your decision about whether or not to participate or to stop participating will not jeopardize your future relations with Idaho State University, the Department of Counseling.

What if you do not want to be in this research?
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. If you do not want to take part it in, do not sign this consent form. If you decide not to be in this study, there will be no negative consequences for you. You will not lose any services or privileges you are otherwise entitled to.

     (1) Currently enrolled in practicum or internship in a CACREP-accredited master’s in counseling program
        OR
     (2) Graduated from a CACREP-accredited master’s in counseling program in the last 6 months
